‘Fouracre claims maiden race win and State Championship at the Island”
Jake Fouracre has been officially named as the 2011 Victorian Formula Ford Champion following a weekend of treacherous conditions that also saw Jake claim his first ever race win at the final round of the State Championship at Phillip Island.
The meeting was also a chance for Fouracre to drive a current model Mygale SJ11A prepared by Minda Motorsport which was a superb chance to gain knowledge into a National spec car. Jake states, “it was a brilliant opportunity to drive the latest model Mygale and our times reflected our strong the car was.”
Fouracre stormed to the top 3 in opening practice, establishing himself well for the Championship chase.
With qualifying occurring throughout a downpour of rain, Fouracre struggled to gain some track space early on, before a red flag was drawn on the session when Jake was just getting into a clear chance to set the pace. A decision post session would unfortunately see Jake excluded from qualifying due to passing under red flag, however his best time proved quickest overall.
Race 1 was not only delayed by 2 hours due to the terrible conditions, it was also shortened to 3 laps however the pace of Fouracre saw him power from 14th to 6th in that time, thus pleasing the 19 year old. “We were confident of the car pace and it was a matter of using our time to the best of our ability to make up race positions,” Fouracre added.
Sunny conditions returned on Sunday with race 2 being one that created some confusion, Jake started from 6th before making it through to 3rd when a Safety Car was called, at the same time, fellow competitor Garry Jacobson was called for a drive through penalty due to a false start which was taken at the completion of the caution period, Sam Power (2nd) then inadvertently followed Jacobson into pit lane in a lapse of judgement that would then see Fouracre go through to claim the race win, and his maiden one in Formula Ford.
Jake was starting from pole for the final race of the season, and he would then lead the field for the opening laps of the race before a fast paced Garry Jacobson managed to get past the Melbourne teenager after a superb dice throughout the course of the event. Fouracre would hold on to claim 2nd for the race and the round, and the overall results from the year would see him claim the Victorian Formula Ford Championship based on the 6 contested rounds.
“It’s been a superb season and to come out with a win is just brilliant, I would like to thank my sponsors and supporters, in particular the team from Mygale who are brilliant to work with, because without them it would not have been possible.
I’m now preparing myself towards a National Formula Ford season in 2012,” Fouracre concluded.
