mitchevans_carThree different Mygale teams and four Mygale drivers took thye first four places for the first race at the Sandown AFFC event this weekend.  The Sonic Motor Racing Services Mygales of Mitch Evans and Nick Percat were again the class of the field, but right there with them was BRM’s Richie Stanaway and new Mygale team, Evans Motorsport, took Trent Harrison to fourth place on debut.

For those who escaped the carnage, it was young New Zealander Mitch Evans who emerged victorious, but an encounter with Ritchie Stanaway may come under speculation from the stewards.

Evans’ Sonic Racing teammate Nick Percat drove a brilliant race, displaying the experience that has him currently leading the championship, moving through the field from eighth place to finish second.

New Zealander Richie Stanaway also drove with a level-head and after fighting Evans for the lead, came home in third place.

Another notable performance this afternoon was from Evans Motorsport’s Trent Harrison. Harrison, who only races occasionally in the national championship, started the race in tenth place and keep his nose clean to finish a respectable fourth.

Over the last 40 years, the Australian Formula Ford Championship has launched the motorsport careers of dozens of our country’s greatest racers. The first Australian Formula Ford race was held at Sandown Raceway in 1969, won by Richard Knight in an Elfin 600, a precursor to his victory the following year in the inaugural Australian Formula Ford series. Since those early days many of the world’s top drivers have come through the ranks of Formula Ford to score major international successes.
