SONIC BLAST OFF TO SUPER START AT SANDOWN

SONIC BLAST OFF TO SUPER START AT SANDOWN

Official release: Sonic Motor Racing Services

April 8, 2016

Sandown rd 1 2016 d

Sonic Motor Racing Services have started 2016 in sensational fashion with round wins in both the GT3 Cup Challenge and Australian Formula Ford Series.

Sonic pilots Leanne Tander, Max Vidau, Ryan Simpson and Hamish Hardeman all came away from their respective weekends at Sandown Motor Raceway with a swag of race wins, points and round successes much to the delight of principal Michael Ritter.

“Everyone did a great job,” smiles Ritter, “it’s only early days obviously but we lead both the GT3 Cup Challenge and Formula Ford Series going into Round Two. I’m very proud of everyone.”

For Leanne Tander Sandown was a triumphant return to the winner’s dais with her new Sonic home base.

“We got caught out a bit with the weather in qualifying but overall I’m really happy with the way it all panned out,” Tander explains, “to come away with a pair of wins, a second place and the overall round win is a very satisfying way to start the series.”

Tander’s teenage team-mate South Aussie rookie Max Vidau was certainly impressive on debut at Sandown also.

“Max surprised a lot of people,” says Ritter, “considering he has little or no experience to finish one point off the podium in a field of 19 cars is fantastic. I’m really pleased with Max’s performance. Leanne was superb, she’s going to be a major series contender this year and her rivals are going to have their hands full. I’m really excited about our year ahead.”

Vidau qualified in 7th position, then put in a 6th place finish in Race One, a tremendous 3rd place finish in Race Two and was holding down third in the final event before he pushed a little too hard and dropped back to 7th.

Tander was fourth in qualifying, took the win in Race One, second place in Race Two and won Race Three for the overall win.

In Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge nobody was surprised to see standout defending champion Ryan Simpson on top of proceedings throughout the weekend.

“We got held up a bit with our strategy in qualifying when the reds came out as we entered the session late,” explains Ritter, so both Ryan and Hamish Hardeman had to work extra hard in their races.

Work hard was what they did, with Simpson taking three wins and outright honours in his Parramatta Smash Repairs entry over team-mate Hardeman in the Arris Property Group / Wild Planet Offroad machine.

“Ryan is the benchmark in GT3 everyone knows that,” Ritter concedes, “so he was every bit as impressive as we know he can be. For Hamish, who only had two events up his sleeve last season, to run second in all three races behind Ryan was really impressive. I’m very pleased with how both the boys ran.”

Indeed it was a brilliant weekend for all concerned as Ritter and Team Sonic heads back to the workshop to prepare for the next round of the Australian Formula Ford Series in late May.

“We’re off to a good start but there’s no time to sit and reflect, we need to keep working. There’s plenty to do.”
