Sonic and Waters win 2011 Australian Formula Ford Championship for Mygale

watersAfter a dominant year, Sonic Motor Racing Services have taken the Australian Formula Ford Championship ( AFFC ) crown yet again with talented youngster Cameron Waters at the wheel of the SJ11a Mygale chassis.  It has become a familiar sight to see all three, and sometimes four, of the Sonic Mygale cars locking out the top spots in qualifying and racing over the last few years.

His 2011 AFFC win makes Cameron the youngest ever Australian Formula Ford Champion, a feat that is difficult to comprehend when you consider that Formula Ford has raced continually in Australia for over 40 years.  Some of Cameron’s peers that have won the championship are , Greg Ritter ( Mygale 1999 ), Luke Youlden ( Mygale 2000 ), Jamie Whincup ( Mygale 2001 / VD 2002 ), Tim Blanchard ( Mygale 2007 ), and Nick Percat ( Mygale 2009 ).  Each of these drivers are real proof that Formula Ford is without doubt the place to build your motorsport career.

watersCameron Waters has shown the way in 2011 holding the AFFC championship lead from round two, and has never looked back.  The Mildura teenager even managed to star in, and win, the Shannons Supercar Challenge television series that was run by V8 Supercar team Kelly Racing.  After making it all the way through, while other contestants fell around him, Cameron was rewarded with the drive in the Kelly Racing V8 Supercar at Bathurst, teaming up with well known driver and media personality, Grant Denyer.

The Sonic Motor Racing Services team continue to impress, “I have been to many countries and dealt with many teams, and the professional approach of Michael Ritter and the Sonic Motor Racing Services team places them as one of the best teams I have seen in the world today, in 2009 Sonic won every championship that they competed in!” said Mygale’s Greg Woodrow.  “The competition needs to continually lift their game if they want to compete against a team like this, and this is making Australian Formula Ford the worlds best”

Cameron’s raise to fame has been impressive, with the Mildura teenager competing in karts, then a quick stint in Formula Vee, where he made contact with Greg Woodrow on a test day, and moved straight into state level Duratec Formula Ford.  Cameron won the CAMS Victorian Formula Ford championship in a family prepared SJ06a Mygale and moved to Sonic at the end of the 2010 AFFC season.  The rest is now history, and Cameron can place his name firmly beside some of Australia’s greatest drivers on the Australian Formula Ford Championship list.

Minda looking good for 2012

Minda-1-smlFresh from taking the runner-up spot in the 2011 Australian Formula Ford Championship, Minda Motorsport has expanded and is looking for even greater success in 2012. The Victorian-based team has retained 2011 Championship Runner-up Jack LeBrocq as its lead FF driver under the Cams Rising Star program and has signed Macaulay Jones (son of V8Supercar team owner Brad Jones) to back up LeBrocq in the Australian Formula Ford championship, and fellow karting gun Todd Hazelwood to contest the Victorian state Formula Ford series.

Jones comes to the team following some very strong seasons in Karting, and some competitive off season testing, while “Jack’s pace in testing has been amazing, we are very confident that we have the package to do the job, and both Macca’s and Todd’s progress is very good. The team is looking forward to getting to the AGP” said team principal Bruin Beasley.

Along with their Formula Ford program Minda have had some big off season changes, with ex-Kelly Racing team member Barry Ryan joining the team to oversee the engineering program.

“Having Barry on board is an important part of our business plan, as we expand and take on new challenges we need the staff and infrastructure to be in charge of our own destiny, and Barry brings an wealth of experience and skill to the team,” said Beasley.

Minda have also taken delivery of a Garry Rogers VE Commodore supercar and has signed Elliot Barbour to contest the Development Series.

“Elliot did some Formula Ford with us as well as his Touring Car Masters outings in the V8 Charger. He has shown very good speed and maturity, we all understand it’s going to be a learning year for Elliot but I have a genuine belief that he will surprise a few people this year. He’s a pleasure to have around and has the right attitude to progress, we have done a lot of homework and we feel we have one of the best cars on the grid. Garry has been fantastic to deal with and I know the car is of a high level,”  stated Beasley.

Adding to Minda’s 2012 program is a two-car assualt on the Australian GT championship, with Dean Koutsoumidis and Jan Jinadassa rejoining the team for another year. Jan will run his 997 GT3 Porsche and the team will take delivery of a Lamborghini from Asia for Dean’s assault in time for the first round at the Clipsal 500.  "The team are really looking forward to the GT championship - we had a toe in the water at the last round at Sandown last year, and Dean came away with a class win, so he’s pumped to get the Lambo and to get to Clipsal, and Jan’s done GT3 Cup Challenge with us in the past so it’s great to have him back for 2012," said Beasley.

Over the off season Minda have also taken the plunge and moved to into a new workshop. "It’s been on the cards for a few years but we felt the time was right, it’s great to walk into in the morning, it’s pretty flash and it makes me grin every time I walk out the office into it,” Beasley said.

Minda Motorsport has a big year planned and are set to carry on the momentum from 2011. “We had a great 2011 with the Formula Ford program. The championship was basically Minda and Sonic, at one stage we had 4 podium spots and 4 race wins out of the possible 6 and with a number of race and round wins in our first year with the Mygale chassis we are ready to move further forward. I believe we were the only team to set a lap record last year, so 2012 is looking great for us,” Beasley said.

Heimgartner steers Mygale to victory in New Zealand

andre16 year old New Zealand motorsport prodigy Andre Heimgartner has taken a convincing victory in the 2011/12 New Zealand Formula Ford Championship.

The talented Aucklander held off a challenge from his Motorsport Solutions Mygale teammate Michael Scott to claim victory during the New Zealand Grand Prix meeting.

It was a dominant season for Heimgartner who greeted the chequered flag first in 11 of 15 races throughout the championship, run over five race meetings with three races per meeting.

The Championship victory gives Mygale its fourth straight New Zealand Formula Ford Championship and the second in a row for Heimgartner. He also successfully defended both the Ron Frost Memorial Trophy and the Morrie Smith Memorial Trophy, two of New Zealand's most sought after motor Racing prizes.

The championship was sealed with a victory in the final race of the series at Manfield and afterwards Heimgartner delighted the large crowd with a celebratory donut.

In just three seasons Heimgartner has now won two national Formula Ford titles, the South Island Formula Ford Championship and the Winter Formula Ford Championship along with a host of other awards and trophies.

Mygale's Greg Woodrow, present at Manfield to see Heimgartner claim the trophy, was full of praise for the talented youngster.

"It's pretty obvious that Andre has a very bright future in the sport, he's definitely a star in the making," Woodrow said.

"At Mygale we're very proud to have taken our fourth straight New Zealand Championship and we heartily congratulate both Andre and John Crawford at Motorsport Solutions on another outstanding season."

DePasquale hits the ground running

Anton-DePasqualeFresh from being selected as the winner of Mygale's Arrow Rewards program for 2011 Anton DePasquale has taken the spoils during the first round of the Victorian Formula Ford Championship at Winton Motor Raceway last weekend.

Driving a Mygale for Sonic Motor Racing Services the 16 year old Victorian took a stunning pole position and three out of four race wins to prove he will be a driver to watch over the course of the championship's five rounds.

Never having completed a race start in a Formula Ford, DePasquale was beaten to the first corner in each race by experienced Harvest Motorsport driver Caleb Rayner. Rayner managed to hold on for the win in race one but in the subsequent races of the weekend De Pasquale would overtake Rayner and drive off into the distance to secure the Championship lead.

Anglo Australian Motorsport's Jonathon Venter rounded out the podium in each race, the 16 year old Mygale driver using the Victorian Championship meeting as a warm up for this weekend's opening round of the National championship to be held in conjunction with the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park.

Also prominent was 2010 Arrow Rewards winner Todd Hazlewood. The young South Australian showed great maturity and pressured the much more experienced Rayner and Venter for a podium position in each race before filling an impressive fourth place in his Minda Motorsport run Mygale.

The Arrow Rewards program offers karters unprecedented career advancement possibilities, supplies them with incredible financial incentives and the opportunity to kick start their circuit racing career in Mygale's dominant Formula Ford and Formula Three chassis.
